I was thinking about getting one in a few months since my brother's DS Lite has nothing going for it at the moment, and I just wanted your thoughts on how good/crap/heavy/bright it is. I don't wanna buy a lemon. So, fess up. Wtf?

I don't really use mine anymore but I do enjoy it. It's hadny to have around, but if your going on extended trips without a charger (Even though it comes with a car one) then the 5 hour battery can be a bit of a pain...

Keero...wants a PSP? Proof that this world isn't real anymore! Shifty

Seriously, I'm planning on buying one too eventually. I wish Sony had dropped the price a bit more than $30 considering even a basic memory card is $30, bringing the total purchase back up to $200 anyway.

The PSP is usually promoted for its functional diversity, but I personally only intend to play PSP games on it. I don't need internet connectivity with my handheld game system (which DS offers as well, I think). You can also play emulated games on a PSP up through the PS1/N64 generation. (I've heard rumors that there's been attempts at getting Dreamcast emulation on a PSP too.) However, I don't suggest downgrading the PSP for emulation purposes since you're taking a major risk that could leave you with a $170 machine that no longer works.

To give you some ideas, games I plan to buy for this system are:

Valkyrie Profile 1 - This one is disappearing from stores quickly. Although I don't own a PSP yet, I bought a copy of this game from the Toys r Us bargain bin before the last copies disappeared entirely from stores in my area.

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters - It's Ratchet and Clank. Need I say more?

Metal Slug Anthology - I've never played any games in this series, but it looks worthwhile.

Disgaea - A port of the PS2 strategy rpg cult classic that I've never had the chance to play.

Tales of the World - Not a standard Tales game but it definitely looks superior to that DS Tales game coming out later this year. It's a unique story but you have access to characters from most other Tales games including Symphonia and Abyss. (Yay! I get to use Luke and Tear once more.)

We Love Katamari - Bargain bin game at Toys r Us that I'm tempted to buy since I enjoyed the original PS2 Katamari Damacy. I'm not sure how this will play with only 1 joystick though.

God of War - Not sure if this is a port, and it may be too violent for your tastes. I'm tempted to try it since I haven't played a game like Rygar or Ninja Gaiden in a while. I assume this is in the same category as those.

Prince of Persia Rival Swords - Same reasoning as above.

Sonic Rivals - I need a good Sonic game to make up for the horror of Sonic Heroes and other recent Sonic releases. I've heard this is more like a sidescrolling Sonic but in modern polygonal graphics.

Megaman games - There's 2 Megaman games for PSP, and since I've never played a Megaman game in my life, I may try these. I know you've said countless times how much you like that series.

Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles - I know you dislike this series, but I'm listing it anyway. Razz

only good thing about the PSP is that with the old firmware (before they blocked all these downloaded games things) you can play OpenTTD on it. i don't own 1, i don't even own a DS, all i have is a GBA(i have 2, 1 has an afterburner unfortunatly its front screen popped off, and its now full of dust Sad )

One extra comment I want to make after doing a search just now for PSP accessories: good luck finding a reasonably priced memory card. I'm greatly annoyed that all the stores that had reduced the various memory cards by $15-30 when the PSP system price dropped have apparently raised their prices back to the originals. They were supposed to be permanent price drops! Grrr...

I use mine for FF7-9. Hacked up firmware for great justice.

Shame that the games are relatively shite bar a few gems.

Yeh. I've been tempted lately, purely by the fact that it might finally induce me to play FF7 Razz
Although the thought of bricking it, given that I just bricked my Zen Micro does kinda make me cringe.
Worth the risk?

Maybe if you found a trusted source, you could avoid that problem. I'd love to play the old FFs on that thing mind. I'm considering getting one again. I had one twice but had to sell it both times as i lacked money.

Bah, I don't know whether to get the Core or Entertainment pack, since the Ent. one is $50 CAD more, and you get a craptastic game (ATV game = instant fail), skater movie (Rolling Eyes) and the same stuff as the core, but it comes with a 1 gig memory stick. And since the sticks cost 50+ bucks up here, I don't think it's such a bad tradeoff. Besides the games, I do want a MP3 player. Embarassed

I was thinking of picking up these games myself:

Burnout Legends -- (Burnout Revenge is such an awesome game on the PS2)
X-men Legends 2 / Marvel: Ultimate Alliance -- (I played XML2 on the PC so much my eyes still hurt.)
Rachet and Clank: Size Matters -- (Never played the series beyond some demoes, looks great.)
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror -- (Looks decent.)
WipeOut Pure -- (Ehh, played the original PS1+PC version. It was decent.)
And both Megaman titles.

Stuff about emulating PS1 games... yeah.

Emulation did look promising, but I wouldn't really want to attempt it untill I know it works right with no hitches. I really wanna play Crash Team Racing or MGS again though. Razz

Wipeout Pure is a bit short, but it's also really great to play. THe others I haven't played so I can't really comment, except for XML2 on PS2 and they are just awesome games.

I wasn't aware that the entertainment pack includes a 1 gig memory card. From what I saw, it included 1 or 2 crappy games and a pack of accessories I don't really want. I plan on getting a 1 gig memory card as well seeing as I won't be emulating games or loading any other relatively large files onto the card.

If what I read on other forums is true, then there's an additional catch to downgrading your PSP for emulation. Supposedly, the downgrading process requires you to abuse a glitch in older copies of one of the Grand Theft Auto games. So, good luck finding an appropriate copy of that game. Your best bet would be a rental store since you only need the game long enough to abuse the bug. Rental stores are more likely to have older versions of the games.

As we discussed on the messenger, consider Tales of Eternia as well. It's an excellent game to play if you haven't already tried it on PS1.

I really need to read more about the PSP when I have the time. I've got various issues I need addressing:

1. Since patches and extra software can be put on a PSP, I wondered if a PSP can play import games without the usual hassle of physically adding a chip to the hardware like most console systems. I wouldn't mind being able to play an import of Tales of Destiny 2 on a PSP if I knew it could play imports.

2. Through the USB port, the PSP can be connected to a computer. I wondered if I can use my pc's internet access on the PSP when connected. Related to this concern, I wonder if any multiplayer PSP games can be played online that way. If not, it would be a great function for Sony to implement in future games.

In regards to downgrading... It all depends on the currently installed PSP firmware version. Older versions of the firmware (up to 1.7 I think) require nothing but a memory stick to put the appropriate files on and newer firmwares (1.8 to 3.03 if I remember correctly) require the correct version of LCS.

Of course, the easiest way to avoid the hassle is to get a homebrew and piracy ready PSP off eBay with the 1.5 firmware installed. I got mine that way and have had no problems thus far, it even helpfully came with a 2gb memory stick.

The PSP is region locked - only by downgrading or installing one of the (pretty shitty) chips on the market can this be gotten around (as far as I know anyway.).
I don't believe the USB function can be used as internet access and a Wi-Fi access point is instead required.

PS1 emulation uses sony's own emulator created for use with the PS3 and the online store. around 90% of all games run close enough to perfectly.
Megadrive, GBC, Mastersystem, NES, SNES and any older consoles work pretty much perfectly (Tweaking is required for the SNES and Donkey Kong Countries do not work. Mario All Stars does though. Razz) GBA emulation is decent though a lot of good titles don't work 100%. N64 emulation is crappy with around 20-40fps at best. As mentioned, PSX emu is perfect.

Other tools I use are eBook readers, a plug-in enabling action replay like functions and plug-ins relating to the PSX emulation to correct minor graphical glitches. eBook reader is by far the most useful tool I have on it.

And finally in regards to games, the following are loved:
Wipeout Pure
Locoroco
Lumines (both)
Bust-a-Move

For the PS1 emulation, do you just transfer a PS1 ISO onto the stick and the PSP loads it, or how does that work exactly? Zip it (And what about PS1 games that require R2/L2?)

UMD Movies are region Locked only.

My PSP comes from Canada and i'm 99% certain it'll play Australian PSP games.

I'll test that theory out later this week.
